Phone Validator FAQ — Questions from Marketing Teams & Call Centres

Common questions from marketing teams, call centres, and CRM developers about phone number validation, DNC compliance, and the PhoneValidator service.

What Phone Validation Checks

What exactly does a phone validator check?

A phone validator queries carrier databases in real time to determine: (1) whether the number is valid and currently active, (2) the line type — mobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free, or prepaid, (3) the current carrier and the original carrier if the number was ported, (4) whether the number is on the Federal Do Not Call registry, and (5) geographic data — city, state, ZIP code, and time zone.

What is the difference between phone validation and a reverse phone lookup?

Phone validation checks the number’s status and technical attributes — active, line type, carrier, DNC registration. A reverse lookup returns the owner’s name or address. PhoneValidator provides validation only. We return no personal data about the number holder.

How does line type detection help my campaigns?

Line type determines your channel eligibility. Mobile numbers can receive SMS messages — landline and VoIP numbers cannot. Knowing the line type before a campaign prevents SMS bounces, wasted dialer time on VoIP numbers, and TCPA exposure from sending texts to non-mobile lines. Filtering to mobile-only before an SMS campaign typically improves deliverability by 8–12%.

What percentage of contact lists are typically invalid?

On average, 20–30% of phone numbers in a typical marketing database are invalid, disconnected, wrong line type, or DNC-registered. The exact proportion depends on data age and acquisition source. Numbers captured more than 6 months ago without re-validation should be considered potentially stale.

DNC & Compliance

What does the DNC check include?

We check the Federal Do Not Call Registry maintained by the FTC. Numbers registered on this list cannot be contacted for telemarketing purposes without prior express consent. The DNC flag is returned in the validation response — you can use it to automatically suppress those numbers from outbound campaigns.

Does validation require consent from the phone number owner?

No. Phone number validation is a carrier database lookup — it does not contact, dial, or message the number in any way. No consent is required to run a validation check. It is the equivalent of looking up a number in a carrier directory.

When should I validate — at lead capture or before a campaign?

Both. Validating at lead capture (real-time API integration into your web form or CRM) prevents bad numbers entering your database in the first place. A pre-campaign batch validation catches numbers that have become inactive or DNC-registered since they were first captured. Running both keeps your data clean on a continuous basis.

Bulk Processing & API

How many numbers can I validate at once?

Up to 50,000 phone numbers per CSV upload. Results are returned as a downloadable file with all validation fields appended. For even larger volumes, use the REST API in a batch loop or contact support for enterprise arrangements.

What CRM and marketing platforms can I integrate with?

Any platform that supports webhooks, API calls, or external automation (Zapier, Make). Common integrations include HubSpot, Salesforce, GoHighLevel, ActiveCampaign, and Klaviyo. The REST API returns JSON, which any modern marketing platform can consume.

How quickly does the API respond?

Under 1 second per lookup. Fast enough for synchronous real-time form validation — you can check and act on the result before the form submission completes. 99.9% uptime SLA.

Account & Credits

How many free credits do I get at signup?

1,000 free validation credits at signup. No credit card required. Apply them to single lookups, bulk CSV uploads, or API calls — whichever you need to test first.

Do purchased credits expire?

Never. Credits stay in your account indefinitely. No subscription, no monthly fees, no expiry on purchased credits. You pay for what you use, when you need it.

Is my contact data stored after validation?

No. Phone numbers submitted for validation are processed in real time and not stored or retained beyond the transaction. We do not retain, sell, or share the numbers you validate.
