Phone Validator FAQ — Questions from Marketing Teams & Call Centres

PhoneValidator’s Phone Lookup tells you: (1) whether the number is Valid (correctly formed and assigned to a carrier) or Invalid, (2) the line type — mobile, landline, VoIP or toll-free, (3) the current carrier, which reflects number porting, and (4) location data — city, state, ZIP code, country and time zone. DNC Lookup is a separate check for US numbers against the Federal (National) DNC list, the TCPA Litigator list and 6 state DNC lists; Phone + DNC Lookup runs both in one step.

Phone validation checks the number itself — Valid or Invalid, line type, carrier and location. A reverse lookup returns the owner’s name or address. PhoneValidator provides validation only. We return no personal data about the number holder.

Line type tells you which channel fits. Mobile numbers are the ones to use for SMS; landlines cannot receive texts. Knowing the line type before a campaign helps you avoid paying for undeliverable texts and wasting dialer time, and it matters for TCPA, because calls and texts to mobile numbers have stricter consent rules.

It depends on the age and source of the data. Lists that were bought, collected long ago, or never validated tend to hold more invalid numbers, wrong line types and numbers on DNC lists. Numbers captured more than 6 months ago without re-validation should be treated as potentially stale.

DNC Lookup screens US numbers against the Federal (National) DNC list, the TCPA Litigator list and the state DNC lists of Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Colorado and Wyoming. Results come back as Cleaned Number, TCPA Litigator, Federal (National) DNC or Invalid Number. Using our service does not register you with the National DNC Registry — keeping any access (SAN) the law requires is your responsibility. No. A lookup checks data about the number — it does not call, dial, or message the number in any way.

Both. Validating at lead capture (API integration into your web form or CRM) keeps bad numbers out of your database in the first place. A pre-campaign check catches numbers that have become invalid or been added to a DNC list since they were captured — scrub with DNC Lookup before every calling or SMS campaign.

Up to 50,000 rows per CSV file, and up to 50 files at a time. Results come back as downloadable files with the lookup fields added to each row, and stay available for 10 days. The API takes up to 1,000 numbers per request; for larger files we can raise the per-file limit on request.
