DNC Scrubber: Remove Do-Not-Call Numbers and Protect Your Brand

A DNC scrubber finds the numbers on Do Not Call lists in your outbound lists before your campaign goes live. For telemarketing it is not optional — it is a core part of a compliant calling or texting process.

What Does a DNC Scrubber Do?

A DNC scrubber — also called a DNC cleaner or DNC purger — takes your contact list and checks every number against Do Not Call data. RealValidito’s DNC Lookup screens US numbers against the Federal (National) DNC list and the state DNC lists of Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Colorado and Wyoming. Numbers that match are flagged, allowing you to remove them from your outbound campaign before any agent makes a call or any system sends a text.

A professional DNC scrubber also goes further than the DNC lists. Every DNC Lookup also screens the TCPA Litigator list — known plaintiffs, attorneys and others connected with telemarketing lawsuits. These are among the highest-risk contacts in any outbound dataset, so they come back with their own status, separate from DNC hits.

DNC Scrubbing for Marketing Teams vs Call Centres

Marketing Teams

For marketing operations running SMS campaigns, the DNC scrub shows which contacts are on a DNC list before you text them. For SMS, also confirm the line type with Phone Lookup — or run both at once with Phone + DNC Lookup and download the “Clean mobiles” file. Only mobile numbers with clear consent should receive automated texts regardless of DNC status.

For outbound email marketing, clean phone data also serves as a secondary quality signal on the overall contact record — if someone gave an invalid phone number at opt-in, their email address may also be suspect.

Call Centres

For outbound call centres, DNC screening is a legal requirement before telemarketing calls. Under the FTC’s Telemarketing Sales Rule, sellers must use National DNC Registry data that is no more than 31 days old, so the common practice is to scrub the full call list before every campaign launch — and at least every 31 days for ongoing campaigns.

How to Set Up a DNC Scrubbing Workflow

  1. Export your full outbound list from your CRM or dialer platform
  2. Upload as a CSV to RealValidito’s DNC Lookup (up to 50,000 rows per file, one Phone column), or submit via API
  3. Download the results file — choose All data, Cleaned, TCPA Litigators, Federal DNC or State DNC; each number is marked Cleaned Number, TCPA Litigator, Federal (National) DNC or Invalid Number
  4. Import the suppression list — add all flagged numbers to your dialer’s or CRM’s suppression list
  5. Document the scrub — record the date, file version, and result counts for your compliance records
  6. Repeat before each campaign

Automate DNC Scrubbing at Lead Capture

The most efficient model is to validate every incoming phone number at the moment of capture — web form submission, imported list, or API intake — before it enters your CRM. This way, numbers on a DNC list are tagged before they become part of your active contact universe. Use the Phone + DNC Lookup API for intake validation: one call returns the phone status, line type and carrier together with the DNC status (cleaned, TCPA Litigator, Federal DNC, with any state list named).

⚠️ Don’t Confuse Federal and State DNC Lists

The National DNC Registry is run by the FTC and covers the whole US. Separately, some states keep their own DNC lists. RealValidito’s DNC Lookup includes six of them — Texas, Florida, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Colorado and Wyoming — at no extra cost; a state hit shows as Federal (National) DNC with the state named. Many other states merged their lists into the national registry. If your campaign targets other states, check that state’s own rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I re-scrub my lists?

Before every calling or SMS campaign, and at least every 31 days for ongoing campaigns. People add numbers to DNC lists all the time, so a number that was clean last quarter may be listed now.

Does scrubbing delete numbers from my CRM?

A DNC scrub returns a status for each number — it does not modify your CRM. You decide what to do with flagged numbers. Most teams either archive them to a suppression list or add a DNC flag field in their CRM and filter them out at campaign build time.

Can I scrub lists for clients as an agency?

Please ask us first. Providing lookup results to clients or other third parties needs RealValidito’s written permission under our Terms. A simple alternative is for each client to open its own free RealValidito account.
